It has been a while since we went swimming. I want to go periodically as to not allow fear of the water to develop. Plus with a vacation planned I want to make sure the water time there will go better than our last cruise/visit to the beach. So, we went to the pool yesterday. At first Avery clung very tight to my side. She smiled as we went in the water, but she wasn't about ready to try and enjoy it too much. It took a while, but she eventually was having a good time as we simulated her jumping from the sides and swimming about. She's now tall enough that she can stand on the platforms they put in the water and keep her head and mouth fully up and out of the water - so she had some time moving on the platform on her own as well (with me wrapped around her like a dome).
In our list of firsts we can chalk up the destruction of something in a store. We went into TJ Maxx and headed towards the restrooms. It is near the kids clothing and toys, so I stopped at a display with toys when a letter puzzle caught my eye. As I picked that up, Avery picked up a mug that someone foolishly placed on this display. As my eyes returned to her she let go. *smash* I felt awful. The staff was so kind. I offered to pay but she had none of it.
As of late too, when Avery's Dad goes to put her to bed she wants me for the final cuddle. I'll admit, it does my heart good in some ways and I want to get those cuddles too. But alas, it also breaks my heart to hear her crying and unhappy when he tries to put her down.
Another note is that I did pick up a doll stroller for Avery which she's been having a blast with around the house. I couldn't make her wait until Easter to get it. So we also have a swing and straps to connect it to the deck coming for part of her Easter gift. Yes, she'll be spoiled, it's all my fault.
I'm a Mom. After years of desire and uncertainty if the day would ever come here I am. Follow along on the adventure..

Helping with laundry
Avery has always been pretty helpful and responsive if I ask her to hand me something. I shouldn't be as surprised as I am by tonight, but I am.
I neglected to pull her load of laundry from the dryer before I picked her up today. I thought, well let's see if she'll let me fold her laundry when we go up to get ready for bed. I opened the dryer and she started pulling items out one at a time and handing them to me. I'd fold it and take the next item from her. She pulled every single item out of that dryer. I have such a helpful and sweet girl. I'm so proud of her. Don't worry, she was rewarded with reading an extra book before bed!
Her first assessment came from daycare on their scale they ranked her as such, vs what I would have given based on my experience with her at home and the "expectations" for being on schedule:
Communication 25/60 vs 45/60 - on schedule = 30+
Gross Motor 60/60 vs 60/60 - on schedule = 47+
Fine Motor 50/60 vs 55/60 - on schedule = 43+
Problem Solving 30/60 vs 30/60 - on schedule = 36+
Personal/Social 30/60 vs 35/60 - on schedule = 37+
That said, it looks like we need to do a little more with her to test her problem solving skills out and she's a bit more quiet/less talkative at school than she is here at home.
I will note that under problem solving, within the 6 questions one she didn't meet repeated! At the same time, it's one skill I'm glad she hasn't discovered: that putting a cheerio into a bottle she doesn't turn the bottle upside down to dump it out.

Incident Report
On Friday when I picked up Avery from daycare I signed my first 'incident report'. When they said they had one for me I admit, I'm awful, and thought it meant she hit someone or something. No, instead she tumbled while running in the gross motor skills room and bonked her head. She has a decent black and blue mark there still tonight.
Throughout the weekend she managed to tap it off of the railings on the stairs and then tonight when she was frustrated she was bopping her head on the kitchen floor.
Speaking of her head... at the pediatrician appointment we measured in at 20" around, that's in the 99th percentile! Her height at 32" which puts her in the 50th percentile and her weight at 25 lbs 1.5 oz, which is in the 75th percentile.
She did get two more shots while there. Today she woke a little snotty and coughy, but seemed less doomed to illness as the day progressed.
We're also getting definitive NOs from her now. Man is she going to be a challenge as she starts to use that big old noggin. Her Dad told her if she didn't eat he was going to turn off Elmo. I didn't think she'd understand it, but when he went and picked up the remote and repeated himself she said No with a tone that rang of "how dare you!"

I poop, therefore I am.
We remain binky free. That was way too easy. I feel like I say this often with Avery.
She is also telling us "I poo". Usually it is announced after she's gone, but she even told me in advance one day. This is definitely the first step towards potty training. So I went ahead and bought the potty I was planning to get for her. We won't be trying to train any time soon, but I want her to get okay with it being around and even sitting on it fully clothed for the time being.
I've been hearing the above phrase a lot the last few days. She's been a bit loose and diaper rashed. Is it from incisors starting to push down? I can't tell. But I know her rear has been quite sore.
She had a few rough night's of sleep in a row too. The first night she woke with a squealing cry, the one that tells me to get up directly, not to wait it out. I found her feet through the slats fairly far. I was able to get her back down within a reasonably short amount of time, prolonged only by my attempts to get a blanket on her after I put her down (if she starts to cry and stands it comes back off, obviously). The next night we were in the midst of the loose stool. She woke crying and I decided to go in to check to see if she went, rather than leaving her to fall back asleep with a poopy diaper. Sure enough she needed changed. From there she didn't want to go back down as easily.... at least not until she pooed again less than an hour later. Then the third night, shortly before bedtime the power kicked out. Her room is shockingly dark without her clock or sleep machine glowing, so it wasn't the easiest put down.
Tonight we head to the doctor for her 18 month appointment!
Daycare is going well at drop off now, but she continues to come home with report cards that say she's not eating much there other than bread and fruits.

More leaps towards toddlerhood
The latest things I have to report on Avery's progress towards becoming a big girl include both her first independent attempt at a somersault (which I caught on video by accident) and the removal of her binky or at least so far.
School had reported that she only used the binky at nap time for a few days after joining them. Once I learned this I decided to try taking it away at nap times, which went well, so tonight is now the third night without her binky. Avery is fussing a bit after going down, but settling mostly on her own. I wonder if I will be officially able to call the binky a thing of the past by the 18 month mark.

What's your name?
I am telling you, every day... every day there is something new. Avery is definitely trying to say her name in response to the inquiry "what is your name?" It sounds more like A-ree, but it's very consistent.
She is also trying to say Aunt Jackie and even Barry for our friend Mr. Barry.
Today I also caught her on film doing two other things. First "going fast" (sticking her arms out nehind her and trotting away). I guess it is from some old cartoon. Ask her Dad. The second was her first attempt to complete a forward roll on her own! She went off to the side but it was a good try.

Everything changing
The smile evolved into actually reaching for a teacher in the morning. Today I only got one quick hug before the turn away from me happened. I'll blame it on the yummy smelling breakfast, but I think Avery is feeling okay with her new daycare.
Today I got her out of the seat in the lot and carried her to the sidewalk. From there she walked into the building herself. I was going to march her straight to the classroom, but she stopped at her hook and started working to get her jacket off. How big is my girl?! At this point she would not walk any further, so I gladly picked her up for a hug as we took the last few steps down the hall.
On the way out I held her little hand as she walked down the hall and up all of the stairs to the door. Since it was rainy and gross I carried her from there.
She still isn't loving all of their food however, so she was ready to eat when we got home. She ate a cutie all by herself, save one slice I tried, and then she grabbed the spoon and proceeded to make good progress on the fruit and cereal and yogurt. She was even willing to try a couple of little bits of my steak!
Avery's vocabulary continues to expand every day. I counted over 30 words and 12 signs, but I know I am missing some in my list. When she can understand is beyond all of that for sure as she seems to really grasp a lot of concepts.
